Born in China in 1914, Chuah Thean Teng is a full-time artist who was educated at Amoy Art Institute, China. He had participated in numerous local and international art exhibitions, and held various one-man shows locally and abroad since 1959.
Teng is venerated for developing the ancient technique of batik as a medium for painting contemporary rural Malaysia. Two of his batik paintings were selected by the UNICEF in 1965 and 1988 respectively. The themes that appear in Teng's works include the human figure, landscape and abstract compositions. Of these, human figure is the most significant, and it is in this direction that he has established a distinct figure-type.
